Dress Codes

The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following: Students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard to themselves or others. The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the principal’s judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations. 

The District prohibits pictures, emblems, or writings on clothing that:

1. Are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene. 
2. Advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under FNCF(LEGAL).

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time.

Yoakum Annex requires students to adhere to the following:

• No tank tops and/or spaghetti straps
• Shorts must be of appropriate length.
• Students must wear tennis shoes to school.  Students will not be allowed to change shoes during the school day.
• Shorts must be of appropriate length.
• Boys must have hair no longer than the back collar of their shirt, and no longer than their eyebrows in the front.
• Girls must have their hair neat as well.
• Boys are not allowed to wear earrings on campus.
• Hair must be of natural color.

Shirts:

• Students may wear any polo style shirts with a collar and/or button down shirt with a collar. Shirts with collars may be of any color/design as long as it is deemed appropriate. Students may also choose to wear any Yoakum Bulldog/spirit t-shirt to school.

Bottoms:

• Boys may wear pants and/or shorts
• Female students may wear pants, shorts, skirts and/or skorts. It is encouraged that students who wear a dress and/or a skirt should wear shorts underneath (students have PE and play outside each day). 
• All bottoms must fit appropriately at the waist, and be free of holes. Boxer and/or spandex shorts are not acceptable to be worn at school as outerwear.  
• The length of shorts/skirts/dresses should not be shorter than the longest finger tip when hands are held at the student's side.

Male Students:

• May not wear earrings

Shoes:

• Students must wear tennis shoes to school every day. Students will have PE and/or outside play time every day and must have tennis shoes on to participate.  

Students not arriving at school wearing the proper dress code, will be provided with the appropriate clothing, if available.  A note will be sent home and parents are asked to return the clothes that were provided to your student for the school day.

Face Coverings All students are expected to wear a school-appropriate face covering during the COVID pandemic except for during recess and P.E. activities.

Shirts Buttoned oxford or polo shirts/blouses will be worn. All shirts will be free of words and/or pictures, etc. Logos (Izod, Polo, Dockers, etc.) may not be any larger than 1-inch square. All shirt buttons, except the collar button, must be buttoned at all times. All shirts will have a collar and sleeves. An approved, Yoakum Bulldog, school-spirit shirt (including t-shirts) may be worn on any day of the week. The original construction of the Yoakum Bulldog spirit shirt cannot be modified or altered. No oversized t-shirts or shirts/blouses will be allowed. Shirts must be tucked in.

Bottoms: Male students shall wear either pants or shorts. Female students will be allowed to wear pants, shorts, skorts, or skirts. All bottoms must fit appropriately at the waist, be neatly hemmed, and be free of oversized logos, words and decorations. Company logos on back pockets are permitted. No skin may show through any holes in jeans or shorts. Pants shall not be overly tight, baggy, and/or low riding. Pants must be hemmed and not frayed. Boxers, tights, leotards, and spandex shorts are not acceptable as outerwear. If pants are loose around the waist, a belt is required.

Sweaters, Sweatshirts, Jackets and Coats Sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets and coats may be worn as outerwear over standardized shirts. This includes hooded sweatshirts. These garments will not be limited other than restriction of offensive words or logos. These garments may not hang lower than the back pockets. School administrators reserve the right to make judgment calls concerning restriction of outer garments.

Male Students:

• Boys are not allowed to wear earrings or posts.
• Boys are not allowed to wear sagging pants.
• Boys must be clean-shaven. Distracting hairstyles are not acceptable. Hair should not cover the eyes.  The hair on the side may cover the ear to the bottom of the ear lobe, but must be trimmed and neat. Boys may not wear beads in their hair or have ponytails. Hair may not hang on the sides of the face when the head is bowed. Hair must be one natural color and not a distraction.

Female Students:

• Proper undergarments and/or foundation garments must be worn.
• Transparent blouses are not allowed. Dresses or tops cannot be cut lower than the armpit. Modest necklines are required for the front and back of garments. Spaghetti straps are not permitted.
• The length of the shorts, skirts, and dresses must be no shorter than the tip of the middle fingers of the hand, with arms down beside the body and shoulders straight. The slit of a skirt must not extend beyond the fingertips. Shorts may not be tight fitting. Cut-off jeans and spandex/cycling shorts will not be allowed.

**Additional Dress/Grooming Guidelines for Intermediate ** Each student is expected to have an appearance that does not take away from the education/learning process. Dress and grooming that is not considered reasonable in standards of health, safety, modesty, and decency will not be allowed. On regular school days, students should wear clothes and shoes that are appropriate for participation in P.E. class (tennis shoes, shirt, and shorts or pants). Parents will be requested to bring a change of clothing if the student arrives at school in unacceptable attire. Caps/hats: Hats and caps will not be worn at school except on designated special occasions.

Cleanliness: Daily baths and deodorant (if applicable) are essential for health standards. Clothing:  Leotards or skin tight pants are not permitted as outerwear. Skulls are not permitted on any clothing.  Flannels or other jackets should only be worn on cold weather days. ● Cologne/After-shave/Perfume: None is permitted. ● Hair/Nails/Tattoos: Designs cut into the hair, barrettes or distracting hairstyles are not acceptable. Hair may not cover the face when the head is bowed. Hair must be one natural color and not a distraction.. Sideburns should be neatly trimmed and should not extend below the ear. Fake fingernails and tattoos will not be permitted. ● Jewelry/Earrings: Earrings may be worn by girls but only permitted on the bottom lobe of the ear. No large or dangling earrings. No earrings will be worn by boys, including temporary posts. Grills are also not permitted. Long jewelry and chains will not be permitted. Shoes: Shoes must be worn. NO Flip-flops. Shoes must be free of steel taps. The school principal may designate special apparel days. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time.

Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

All Students

All shirts will be free of words and/or pictures, etc. Logos (Izod, Polo, Dockers, etc.) may not be any larger than 1-inch square. All shirt buttons, except the collar button, must be buttoned at all times. All shirts will have a collar and sleeves. An approved, Yoakum Bulldog, school. Spirit shirt (including t-shirts) may be worn on any day of the week. The original construction of the Yoakum Bulldog spirit shirt cannot be modified or altered. No oversized or undersized t-shirts or shirts/blouses will be allowed. Shirts must not extend past the bottom of the back pants/shorts pockets. Shirts may be required to be tucked in at an administrator’s discretion.
• Bottoms - Male students shall wear either pants or shorts. Female students will be allowed to wear pants, shorts, skorts, or skirts. All bottoms must fit appropriately at the waist, be neatly hemmed, and be free of oversized logos, words and decorations. Company logos on back pockets are permitted. Pants with holes/tears may not allow skin to be seen. Pants, trouser, or slacks shall not be overly tight, baggy, and/or low riding. Nylon, athletic, wind pants or sweatpants are not acceptable. Boxer or spandex shorts are not acceptable as outer wear. A belt may be required to be worn by a student at an administrator’s discretion.
• Shoes - Crocs, slides, and similar type shoes will not be permitted. No house shoes or slippers are allowed.
• Sweaters, Sweatshirts, Jackets and Coats - Sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets and coats may be worn as outer wear over standardized shirts. This includes hooded sweatshirts. These garments will not be limited other than restriction of offensive words or logos. School administrators reserve the right to make judgment calls concerning restriction of outer garments.
• Head Coverings - Head coverings including hoods, hats, caps, sweatbands, wave caps, bandanas, or feathers will not be permitted on campus. These items may be confiscated and returned at the end of the school year.
• Tattoos must be completely covered at all times.
• Headphones are not allowed to be visible during the school day. 

Male Students 

Boys may not wear earrings or any other type of piercing. Boys are not allowed to wear sagging pants. Boys must be clean-shaven. Freakish or grotesque hairstyles are not acceptable. No unnatural hair colorings permitted. Hair should not cover the face. Boys may not wear beads or feathers in their hair. Lines or designs are not allowed to be shaven into hair. Hair is to be kept neat and out of the eyes. Fingernails must not extend more than ¼" beyond the fingertip.

Female Students

Females may have piercings only in the ear ... no tongue rings or nose rings. Proper undergarments and/or foundation garments must be worn. Transparent blouses are not allowed. Dresses or tops cannot be cut lower than the armpit. Modest necklines are required for the front and back of garments. Spaghetti straps are not permitted. The length of the shorts, skirts, and dresses must be no shorter than the tip of the middle fingers of the hand, with arms down beside the body and shoulders straight. The slit of a skirt must not extend beyond the fingertips. Shorts must be loose fitting. Cutoff jeans, gym shorts, and spandex/cycling shorts are not permitted. * Students who disregard rules on grooming or dress are guilty of insubordination and will be subject to disciplinary action. (See FO, FOA, FOD)

* The administration reserves the right to make judgment calls concerning the appropriateness of dress and grooming when necessary including new fads and fashions.

* Certain extracurricular activities may have higher standards to abide by than the District Code of Conduct and campus dress code. The coaches and sponsors of the extracurricular activities will set acceptable standards for their particular area. Students may be denied participation in an activity for violating the extracurricular standards of behavior.

ALL STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL:

Shirts

Buttoned oxford (western-style permissible) or polo shirts/blouses will be worn. All shirts will be free of words and/or pictures, etc.  Logos (Izod, Polo, Dockers, etc.) may not be any larger than 1-inch square. All shirt buttons, except the collar button, must be buttoned at all times.  Shirts may be a plain color with no holes.  An approved, Yoakum Bulldog, school. Spirit shirt (including t-shirts) may be worn.  The original construction of the Yoakum Bulldog spirit shirt cannot be modified or altered. No oversized or undersized t-shirts or shirts/blouses will be allowed. No transparent garments allowed.  Dresses or tops cannot be cut below the armpit.  Modest neckline required. No spaghetti straps.

Bottoms

Male students shall wear either pants or shorts.  Female students will be allowed to wear pants or shorts.  All shorts are required to be finger-tip length or longer.  All bottoms must fit appropriately at the waist, be neatly hemmed, and be free of oversized logos, words and decorations. Company logos on back pockets are permitted. Pants with holes/tears may not be worn.  Pants or jeans with holes require a patch to be sewn into the pant/jean. Pants, trouser, or slacks shall not be overly tight, baggy, and/or low riding. Pants must be hemmed and not frayed. Nylon, athletic, wind pants or sweatpants are not acceptable. Boxer or spandex shorts are not acceptable as outer wear. If pants have belt loops, a belt is required. Cut-off jeans, gym shorts, and spandex/cycling shorts are not permitted.

Universal Hair Code

Hair must be well groomed and of a natural color. Must be out of the eye line.  If it cannot be kept out of the eye line, student will be required to have hair pulled back or braided.  Hair styles must not be distracting or unsafe in nature or design (i.e.-mo-hawks, faux hawks, spikes, height or shape, etc.).  No shaved designs or symbols will be allowed to be cut in hair. Administration has sole discretion of what is distracting and unsafe

MALE STUDENTS

All staff members are expected to assist in the enforcement of the student dress code.  Students may be given an opportunity to correct the dress code violation.  If student is unable to make correction, disciplinary action shall be taken.

Exception: WEDNESDAYS ONLY - To promote College, Career, and Military Readiness, students and staff may wear university, collegiate, technical school, or military shirts that are aligned with the school dress code.  All dress code requirements must be met, other than the logo requirements.
