Physics


     Physics is an honors credit science course.  Students need to have taken or be currently taking Algebra II. To view the TEKS for this course click here, then click on Chapter 112.science.  As mandated by the TEKS, Physics is a laboratory course and lab work will be involved throughout the year.

Students  will need the following supplies for this course:

  • One three-subject spiral.
  • One one-subject spiral.
  • One one-inch three ring binder or a pocket folder with brads.
  • Pencils and/or pens.
  • Scientific calculator (may use the graphing calculators).
  • Other supplies as dictated by labs or projects to be determined.

Six weeks averages will be determined  as follows: 

  • Daily 25%
  • Lab work 25%
  • Tests 50%

Syllabus:


First semester will consist of the study of mechanics:

  • Safety procedures
  • Basic Physics definitions
  • Math skills review
  • Velocity and acceleration
  • Vector addition
  • Force
  • Work
  • Power
  • Energy

Second semester will consist of the study of basic concepts other than mechanics:

  • Wave properties
  • Sound
  • Light
  • Mirrors and lenses
  • Static electricity
  • Electric fields
  • Current electricity

Special projects that may be involved are:

  • Designing a fan car
  • Designing a mousetrap car
  • Building and flying a rocket
  • Building a circuit that cooks hot dogs
  • Field trips
  • Working with the Intermediate students on a study of space.
