Social Studies Courses




These courses explore “The Individual as Citizen”.  Life-long skills that allow students to become active citizens are developed through a study of United States History, World History, World Geography, U.S. Government, and Economics.


0400    World Geography S
Grade 9

Prerequisite:    ARD Placement
This course surveys world geography today through the use of map, globe, and contemporary events.  A study is made of the social-cultural patterns in different geographic areas and resource utilization relate to environmental factors.  Emphasis is given to current events, topics such as ecology, and the use of natural and human resources.  This course is a continuation of the Social Adjustment program begun in the 9th grade.

This course includes a study of the history and development of variety of world cultures, past and present.  A major goal is to provide students with a basis for the analysis and comparison of various ways of life.  Emphasis is placed on awareness of the diversity and commonality of human experiences and an understanding of their development through the ages.  A study of contemporary world affairs is an essential part of the course.  The course will be tailored to a student’s need.

The Social Adjustment program allows students to identify and modify present attitudes and behaviors in the areas of responsibility, communication assertiveness, and problem solving.  This course includes a survey of the development of the United States with emphasis on the cultural, social, and economic life of the American people during the past century.  Historical principles and precedents are applied to today’s urban industrial democracy.

This course examines the United States political scene today.  Local, county, state, and national government structures are related to the student’s vocational and independent living skills interests.  Analysis of media, political bodies and student’s civic responsibilities, and available services are studied.

Economics is the study of the American free enterprise system and other comparative economic systems.  This course is organized around unifying experiences in both macroeconomics and microeconomics, including stimulations and case studies.

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to study the interaction of man and his environment.  Emphasis is placed on the geographical processes that affect decisions made concerning interrelationships among nations, production and distribution of goods, use and abuse of resources, and political and economic conditions.

This is the second year of a two-year sequential study for United States history begun in grade 8.  It includes significant events, issues, and problems from Reconstruction to the present.  It builds upon and uses, in a variety of relationships, knowledge and concepts acquired in the first year’s study.

First semester: A survey of the history of the United States to 1877. This is a 3 hour college credit course. Second semester: A survey of the US from 1877 to present.  This is a 3 hour college credit course. Total 6 hours college history credit.


0425    Economics with Emphasis on the Free Enterprise System

Economics is the study of how people and countries deal with the problem of scarcity-not enough goods and services to satisfy everyone’s wants and needs.  To understand this problem, students will study the market system, American business organizations, supply and demand, money and banking systems, the national economy, international trade, and other economic systems.

The major goal of this course is to make students aware of the American political process and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to participate in the process as American citizens.  Content includes the structures and functions of our government at national, state, and local levels; concepts of political participation; and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

Prerequisite:    Screening
An introductory survey of the economy as a whole including such topics as economic organization, national income, economic growth, inflation, money and banking, and monetary and fiscal policy.  Additional attention is given the problems of underdevelopment in both domestic and foreign economics and to an analysis of the public sector.

Prerequisite:    Screening
The origin and development of the federal system, national and Texas constitutions, national and Texas legislative, executive, and judicial structure and functions are the focus of attention in this course.
