Biology |
Grades 10 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
None |
| This laboratory-oriented course
involves a survey of living systems and their interrelationships.
Topics include cell structure and function, scientific method,
genetics, taxonomy, fungus, bacteria, viruses, animals, plants, and
ecology. Man’s role and responsibility towards living organisms
and the environment are emphasized. Laboratory skills and safety
procedures continue to be stressed. |

Biology Academic |
Grades 9-10 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Screening for
9th/None for 10th |
| Biology Academic offers students an
in-depth study and observation of living organisms in the environment,
prepared specimens, various ecosystems, and inherited traits.
Student investigations emphasize accurate observations, collection of
data, data analysis, and the safe manipulation of laboratory apparatus
and materials in the field and the laboratory. |

AP Biology |
Grades 11-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Placement,
Screening |
| AP Biology is for the advanced level
biology student. It is a must for pre-med, pharmacy, or biology
majors. It incorporates all of the essential elements of general
biology to a higher degree. Higher order thinking skills will be
addressed through the scientific
method. Topics in the course provide for critical thinking
through
challenging problems, special projects, research, and field
trips. Students
have the opportunity to receive the college credit by scoring at least
a
3 on the AP Exam in May. |

| 0325
Chemistry Basic |
Grades 11-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Alg I/Geom, IPC,
Biology |
| Chemistry Basic is designed to
introduce the student to basic concepts of chemistry. It is the
study of the structure,
composition, and behavior of matter. This course also offers a
review
of both IPC and Biology as well as provides the essential skills
required
on the TAKS exit level test. This course is not designed for the
college
bound student. |

Chemistry |
Grade 10-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Biology,
Currently enrolled in Algebra II |
| The Chemistry course is designed to
introduce the college bound student to the qualitative and quantitative
aspects of a
first year chemistry program. The course of study emphasizes the
investigation of matter, its interactions, and the factors affecting
the interactions. Student investigations emphasize accurate
observations, collection of data, data analysis, and the safe
manipulation of laboratory apparatus and materials in the laboratory
and field. Concurrent enrollment in Algebra II is required. |

Chemistry Academic |
Grade 11-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Biology,
Currently Enrolled in Algebra II |
| The Academic Chemistry course is
designed to introduce the college bound student to the qualitative and
quantitative aspects of a first year chemistry program. Students
selecting Academic Chemistry should have an 85 or better in IPC,
Algebra, Geometry, and Biology (unless taken concurrently). An in-depth
study of the mathematical applications will be stressed. The
course will emphasize the theoretical concepts of molecular
bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibria. The
descriptive aspects
of the periodic table will be dealt with throughout the course.
Concurrent enrollment in Algebra II is required. |

AP Chemistry |
Grade 11-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Pre AP Chemistry |
| Chemistry AP is a course to prepare
students to take the Advanced Placement Exam for college credit in
chemistry or to prepare for college chemistry. The course
includes advanced study of selected topics with emphasis on laboratory
experience and problem solving. The course is designed especially
for those who plan to major in medicine, engineering, nursing,
laboratory technology, or research. (A minimum of 40% lab). |

Physics I (H) |
Grades 11-12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Algebra II |
| Physics I is the study of matter and
energy and their interactions. Students are introduced to
fundamental
concepts in the areas of mechanics, light, sound, heat, electricity,
magnetism,
and nuclear phenomena. Students acquire information using the
senses
and instrumentation. Observations of the laws of force and
motion,
the nature of light, wave phenomena, and properties of electricity and
magnetism are integral components of the course. Student
investigations emphasize accurate observations, collection of data,
analysis of data, and the safe manipulation of laboratory apparatus and
materials. |

Anatomy and
Physiology TECH PREP CREDIT |
Grade 12 |
| 1 Credit |
Prerequisite:
Biology I,
Chemistry |
| Anatomy
and Physiology of Human
Systems is a one-credit course offered which shall include laboratory
investigation and field work using appropriate scientific
inquiry. This hands-on course
is a survey of the structures and functions of the human body and
integrates
the physics and chemistry concepts found in the body systems. In
this
course, the student will investigate the body’s responses to forces:
maintenance
of homeostasis, electrical interactions, transport systems, and energy
processes.
This course will earn local science credit as well as college hours as
a
TECH PREP course. |
