Mathematics Courses

A typical mathematics selection for the General Academic High School Program could include:

Algebra I    Geometry    Algebra II    Algebra I Academic    Geometry Academic    Algebra II Academic

The Advanced/Recommended High School Program requires 3 credits of mathematics which may be chosen from:
Algebra I Academic    Geometry Academic    Algebra II Academic    Pre-Calculus    Pre-Calculus H    Calculus

*If Algebra is taken at junior high, three more years of mathematics are required at high school.

0200-0202    Algebra I S, Geometry S
Grades 9-11
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    ARD Placement
Resource Math provides for individual assessment and remedial work in the basic Resource mathematical operations with curriculum modifications related to the student’s individual learning pattern.  Included are reviews of basic operations on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and metric and English systems of measurement.
0220    Algebra I
 Grades 9-11
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Screening
The purpose of this course is to provide the skills and the concepts of Algebra I at a slower pace.
0221    Geometry
Grades 10-12
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Algebra I
Geometry provides a sound geometry course with an emphasis on applications rather than proof.  The students will be given opportunities to develop concepts and skills involving measurement, shapes, perpendicularity and parallelism, congruence and similarity, area and perimeter, and volume and surface area.  They will also make constructions and use the trigonometric ratios as related to the right angle.
0225    Algebra I Academic
Grades 9-12
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Math Teacher approval
Algebra I is a course intended for students of average to high ability in mathematics who wish to continue their studies in more advanced mathematics courses.  Topics covered include the real number system, polynomials, solving inequalities, solving systems of equations, quadratic equation functions and their graphs.  There will be a state end-of-course test.
0226    Geometry Academic
Grades 9-12
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Algebra I Academic
This course stresses the basic structure of geometry, the application of geometric concepts, and proficiency in developing formal proofs.  Emphasis is placed on inductive and deductive reasoning.  Concepts of space geometry are integrated with plane geometry throughout the course.  Algebraic skills are reviewed and strengthened as algebraic methods are applied to problem solving topics such as relationship of angles, perpendicular and parallel lines, congruent triangles, similarity, circles, and coordinate geometry.
0227    Algebra II
Grades 10-12
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Alg I/Geometry
Algebra II begins with the skills that involve solving equations, inequalities, and systems of equations.  The most important mathematical idea of functions, quadratic functions, polynomial functions, and rational algebraic functions are covered.  Other topics include complex numbers, quadratic relations, sequences and series, and data exploration.  Algebra II is a required class for higher level math courses you may need for post secondary education.
0228    Algebra II Academic
Grades 10-12
1 Credit
 Prerequisite: Alg I Acad/Geom Acad
with grade of 80 or better
Algebra II Academic continues the systematic development of topics covered in Algebra I Academic as well as additional topics including the complex number system, theory of equations, logarithms, matrices, and determinants.  Problem solving techniques and higher order thinking skills will be stressed.  Topics are covered at a faster pace and in greater depth than regular Algebra II.  This course is recommended for those students who plan to attend college and have a strong math background.  It is also recommended for students wishing to take Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus.
0246    Pre-Calculus (H)
Grades 11-12
1 Credit
Prerequisites:  Alg I/Geom AcadAlgebra II
 and Screening
Pre-Calculus is an upper-level math course that is highly recommended for those students planning to attend college and major in any branch of science, engineering, medicine, business, and many other areas.  Pre-Calculus continues the development of many of the topics covered in Algebra II as well as covering trigonometry, polar coordinates, and vectors in two-space and three-space.  Extensive use is made of the graphing calculator.  This course should be taken with teacher recommendation only.
0247    AP Calculus
Grade 12
1 Credit
Prerequisite:    Pre-Calculus H
Calculus AP is an introductory college course that covers elementary functions, differential calculus, and integral calculus.  Course objectives are: (1) to have an understanding of limits, derivatives, and integrals with a point of view relative to the historical background out of which these concepts grew, and a point of view taking advantage of computer and graphing calculator manipulative skills of differentiation and integration;(2) to develop proficiency in the manipulative skills of differentiation and integration; and, (3) to develop abilities in making practical real work application of the principles learned.  Students have the opportunity to receive the college credit by scoring at least a 3 on the AP Exam in May.
0250    College Algebra (Dual Enrollment)/Math 1314
Grades 11-12
1 Credit HS/3 hrs college credit
Prerequisite:    Screening
A study of fundamental concepts of algebra, equations and inequalities, matrices and determinants, functions, exponential and logarithmic function. This is a 3 hr college credit course.
