This program is designed to offer students who are interested in office experience an opportunity to learn office procedures by on-the-job training.  This course, for local credit only, is available to students one hour per day to assist in the high school main office.

This program is designed to offer students who are interested in library experience an opportunity to learn office procedures by on-the-job training.  This course, for local credit only, is available to students one hour per day to assist in the high school library.


0810    Departmental Aide

This program is designed to provide academic departments with student help for activities relating to that department.  Students requesting this course will report to the department chairperson for assigned duties which may include secretarial duties as well as assignment to individual teachers within that department for any of their needs.

This course is designed to offer students who are interested in journalism experience an opportunity to learn editorial skills through on-the-job training.

Prerequisite:    ARD Placement
This course enables the student to focus on the application of the basic skills necessary to adequately function as a consumer.  Objectives are interdependent and will focus on comparative shopping for tangible goods, services computational terms of money, institutions and their applications, components of budgets, and development of functional budgets for basic needs and other desired tangible and services.  The student will focus on the use of various manipulative and electronic devices to perform fundamental operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.


0840    Driver Education
Grades 9-12

Prerequisite:    Students must be 15 years of age before completing the           classroom phase.
This course includes extensive coverage of the state and national standards for traffic safety.  Students are taught proper attitudes, behavior, and skills necessary for defensive driving.  The classroom phase of this course is taught during the Spring Semester before school at 7:00 am.  Students begin the driving phase in late March upon completion of the classroom phase.  The oldest students will drive first.  There is a fee for taking this course.  The fee is established each spring based on average costs determined by YISD.  


0850    Peer Assistance and Leadership

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and interview
The PAL/Peer Helping course is a peer helping program in which selected high school students will be trained to work as peer facilititators with other students on their own campus and/or from feeder middle and elementary schools.  PAL students later use these skills by helping to improve the climate of the school and by helping other students have a more positive and productive school experience.  Issues addressed include at-risk youth, drop out prevention, substance abuse prevention, teen pregnancy, suicide, absenteeism, and other areas of special concern and need.
