This course is designed to introduce
the student to the history of mass media and its role in contemporary
society. Included are the study of the basic features of
journalism and newspaper production,
freedom and responsibility of the press, career opportunities in mass
communications,
and writing to fulfill a variety of assignments.

| This course includes advanced study
of one or a combination of feature, column, editorial, and sports
writing and the role of advertising in newspaper publication.
Students learn the characteristics and purpose of various types of
feature articles, columns, and editorials; sources for feature articles
and editorials; how to define editorial policy; how to conduct
interviews; and other appropriate writing techniques. Students
also study the role of advertising in publication costs, preparation of
ads, and current trends in advertising. |
