English/Language Arts Courses


Courses in the English/Language Arts department are designed to facilitate students’ abilities to communicate.  Through reading recognized works and major authors, students will appreciate their literary heritage and gain additional insights into history and today’s world.  The goals of these courses are to apply and extend students’ abilities to read, write, speak, and listen as they prepare for a career or further education.
Graduation Requirements:  Students are required to take four full years of English/Language Arts and earn four credits.

This class provides for individual assessment and remedial work on communication arts with curriculum modifications related to the students’ individual learning patterns.  Written and verbal communication especially appropriate to vocational future is utilized in developing competencies in basic skills.  Specific skills include listening, speaking, reading, writing, and spelling.

This courses offers skills in evaluating a variety of literature.  Special emphasis is placed on the four stages of the writing process: pre-writing, writing, revising, and editing.  Students write various types of paragraphs and review sentence patterns, grammar, and language usage.

This course offers an in-depth study of a variety of genre including short stories, essays, poetry, drama, and the novel.  Students will refine their writing and concepts of the English language including grammar and language usage.  This honors/GT course exceeds the traditional requirements through content, process, and product.

 This class provides for continuation of skill development in the communication arts.  Reading literatures are introduced including: poetry, drama, novels, and short stories.  Writing skills are expanded in report writings.  Spelling of vocationally relevant words is included.

This course reviews and extends knowledge of grammar, language usage, agreement, and sentence and paragraph construction.  A central aim is effective organization of multi-paragraph essays and written discussions using the various forms of discourse.  Major units include studies of various genre providing a variety of literary studies for analysis and discussion of theme and technique.

   This course is a continuation of communication arts skill development wherein the student expands his reading interests more individually in world literature.  Reinforcement is continued in specific written communication skills, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Students attain a functional level of communication needed in the working world.

 This course focuses on major American writers and the development of American thought from the Puritan period through the modern period.  Students strengthen their abilities to develop a thesis statement, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion and use various forms of discourse and patterns of organization to achieve greater unity, clarity, and coherence.  Concepts of grammar and language usage will be reviewed and extended.  A research project promotes skill in organizing material from several sources and in using the library.

   This course is designed for the serious student of English who plans to take English IV-Dual Enrollment in the senior year.  Selection for this course will be based upon test scores, teacher recommendation, and performance in English II Pre Ap.  The curriculum includes a review of grammar, composition, and research skills with a continued emphasis on outside reading and vocabulary building.  Strong attention will be given the development of composition skills.  Literary emphasis is on the chronological development of American culture and ideas.

This course presents a chronological survey of British Literature from Beowulf to modern times, with special emphasis on the epic and the tragedy.  Improving composition skills, using various forms of discourse and patterns of organization, and reviewing grammar and language usage are chief concerns.

 English IV Dual Enrollment is an introductory college course designed for the outstanding English student who shows maturity and self-discipline.  Emphasis on expository writing by analysis of essays in adopted text.  Compositions stress organization, content, style, and mechanical correctness.  Some classes, designed CAI, will make use of the Computer Laboratory in writing assignments.

This course is available only to those students who have been identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) students according to provisions of the “State Plan for Bilingual Education”.  Whenever students exit from ESOL according to state plan, they should move into regular English classes.  Only two credits of ESOL can count as English credits for graduation.  If a third course is taken, it will count as an elective credit for graduation

Reading I or II is to help students performing as much as five grade levels behind in reading comprehension or experiencing difficulty in content area classes.  Emphasis will be placed on increasing skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, reading rate, study skills, and listening skills.  In this course, students learn techniques for learning from texts including studying word meanings, producing effective summaries, identifying and relating key ideas, drawing and supporting inferences, and reviewing study strategies.
