English/Language Arts Courses |

| Courses in the English/Language
Arts
department are designed to facilitate students’ abilities to
communicate.
Through reading recognized works and major authors, students will
appreciate
their literary heritage and gain additional insights into history and
today’s
world. The goals of these courses are to apply and extend
students’
abilities to read, write, speak, and listen as they prepare for a
career
or further education. Graduation Requirements: Students are required to take four full years of English/Language Arts and earn four credits. |

assessment and remedial work on communication arts with curriculum

related to the students’ individual learning patterns. Written

verbal communication especially appropriate to vocational future is

listening, speaking, reading, writing, and spelling. |

usage
will be reviewed and extended. A research project promotes skill
in
organizing material from several sources and in using the library. |

with a continued emphasis on outside reading and vocabulary
building.
Strong attention will be given the development of composition
skills.
Literary emphasis is on the chronological development of American
culture
and ideas. |

an introductory college course designed for the outstanding English

who shows maturity and self-discipline. Emphasis on expository

by analysis of essays in adopted text. Compositions stress

CAI, will make use of the Computer Laboratory in writing assignments. |

those students who have been identified as Limited English Proficient
(LEP) students according to provisions of the “State Plan for Bilingual
Education”. Whenever students exit from ESOL according to state
plan, they should move into regular English classes. Only two
credits of ESOL can count as English credits for graduation. If a
third course is taken, it will count as an elective credit for
graduation |

| Reading I or II is to help students performing as much as five grade levels behind in reading comprehension or experiencing difficulty in content area classes. Emphasis will be placed on increasing skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, reading rate, study skills, and listening skills. In this course, students learn techniques for learning from texts including studying word meanings, producing effective summaries, identifying and relating key ideas, drawing and supporting inferences, and reviewing study strategies. | |
