ARTHUR BENTON AND LUCY ZIMMER CAIN AWARD

Arthur Benton Cain, born in Yoakum, was the third of five brothers who graduated from Yoakum

High School when it was located on the campus that is now East Side School.  After graduating

from Rice University he returned to Yoakum as a businessman.   He was always interested in the

town and it its schools.  He followed his father, D. B. Cain, as a member of the school board, a

position he held for many years.  He was a member on the board when this building was built 52

years ago.

Lucy Zimmer Cain came to Yoakum as Arthur Cain's bride.  While her children were in school she

worked with the P. T. A. and held many offices in that organization.  When her husband became

ill, she began to teach in high school and later in the Junior High.  She taught English and math.

Mr. and Mrs. Cain loved Yoakum and its schools.  They were proud of its graduates.  They believed

in education and stressed it in their home.  Both of their children, Benton Warren Cain and Emily

Ann Cain Willis, also graduates of Yoakum High School are teachers.  Because of this love, an

award is given yearly to the graduate of Yoakum High School who has the third highest academic

average.  It is to be called the ARTHUR BENTON AND LUCY CAIN AWARD.
