Serving students from a population of approximately 9,447 people, the Yoakum
Independent
School District encompasses 268 square miles in DeWitt & Lavaca
counties
and is located at the heart of the Austin - Houston - Corpus Christi - San
Antonio
diamond.
With public education having been established in 1892, the District
continues
to offer an outstanding instructional program with facilities,
equipment,
and materials that are the pride of the community. All of the
classrooms
are air conditioned, and three gymnasiums serve the P.E. and athletic
needs.
The community approved an eight million dollar bond issue
in 1998 for the purpose of classroom construction and renovation, and
new Intermediate 4th Grade, Primary Annex, and High School Math Science
buildings were completed in the Fall of 2000. Voters approved a
2.5 million dollar bond issue in May 2000 for new athletic facilities
and a new band hall, which were completed in the Fall of 2001.
Renovations to the "Old Main" High School were completed in the Fall of
2003. In 2007, voters approved a 7.5 million dollar bond issue
for renovations to the Primary School, a new Cafeteria/Auditorium at
the Intermediate School, and renovations to the High School
Auditorium. These projects will be underway in 2008.
The Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, and support personnel
continually
work toward creating and maintaining a school system that strives for "Excellence
in Education" for every student. A successful
athletic
and band program balance the academic program. Seventy percent
of the graduates continued their formal education after high
school.
These students received scholarships and awards totaling approximately
$200,000 in 2007.
Yoakum ISD provides a comprehensive educational program which features
a system where reading, mathematics, and language arts have highest
priority.
Academic excellence has been established largely through the efforts of
a dedicated professional staff. Yoakum ISD takes pride in its teaching staff. In addition to the
required bachelors degree, teachers must upgrade skills by completing
additional
college courses and/or workshops every three years. Classroom teacher
salaries range from $28,320 to $48,583.

Once known as "The Magic City of South Texas" because of its early
growth,
Yoakum owes its success to agriculture, industry, and the
railroad. Located in Yoakum is the District
Headquarters for the Texas Department of Transportation, the Bluebonnet Youth
Ranch for neglected and abused children, two meat packing and processing plants, several
leather manufacturing industries, a plastic pipe manufacturer, two metal fabrication plants, insurance
companies, and rail, bus, air,
and motor lines.
The city is served by three local banks, its own hospital, MAST
Helicopter Services, six medical doctors, two dentists, two nursing
homes, and
one
veterinary clinic.
In the community are numerous civic and service clubs; youth,
agricultural,
and church organizations; a community center; The Yoakum Heritage
Museum;
twenty churches; weekly newspaper; cable TV; and Public Library.
Major events include the annual Leather Tom Tom Festival, Rock, Ride
& Roll Rodeo, Ranch Rodeo, Tom Tom Rodeo, FFA Stock Show, Christmas
Tree Forest, Holiday Tour of Homes, Country Craft Show, and Land of
Leather Days.
Two parks, one of which is the 146 acre City Park, including a 9-hole
golf
course, picnic and camping facilities, lighted tennis courts, baseball
and soccer fields, rodeo arena, and public swimming pool, serve the
city.
Two institutions of higher learning, Victoria College and the
University
of Houston at Victoria, are within easy driving distance of Yoakum.
The community's charm comes from a successful blend of Old German
and Czech culture with modern American culture and other various ethnic
groups, religions, and creeds. All of these work together to make
Yoakum a quiet, family oriented city in which to live. |
